4 Ways to Foster Your Child’s Creativity

A lot of people assume that children are either born smart or creative. Little Angels Preschool, a provider of childcare services in Chino, California, thinks otherwise. Truth be told, creativity is more of a skill than an inborn talent. You learn how to be creative and it is a skill we can help our children develop.

Here are some ways on how you can encourage your child to be creative:

  1. Give them the resources.

The most important resource you can ever give your child is time. Give them time where they can make things without the supervision of an adult. This is essential so they can have an unstructured, imaginative, and child-directed play.

Another important resource your kid needs is space. Creativity is messy. If you do mind the mess it produces, give your child space where they can unleash their imagination. It can be the attic, a place in the garage, or a corner.

  2. Foster a creative atmosphere.

Just like our childcare center in California, you need to have a creative atmosphere in your home. It does not have to be a space as we mentioned earlier. You can ask your little one some ideas or activities they want to do on a weekend.

For example, during dinnertime, you can solicit and brainstorm activities they have never done before. But we all know kids’ ideas. They can be crazy at times. Even though how crazy these ideas are, you need to resist the urge to decide which ideas are good to follow. Let them have the independence to decide.

  3. Encourage your kid to make mistakes,

Kids can make mistakes. This can hinder their creative minds to work. If by any chance they failed at a particular thing, share your own failure stories. Tell them that it is not the end of the world and that they can pick up where they started and start over.

Aside from telling them stories on how you once failed or how great minds failed but succeeded after trying all over again, you can also tell them to laugh at their mistakes. This will blow the happiness habit, therefore, telling them to still continue being happy despite failures.

  4. Celebrate innovation and creativity

You do not have to hold feasts whenever your child makes a beautiful portrait or gets awarded in talent fairs. Simply displaying their work on the fridge or other noticeable areas of the house will do. This is one of the reasons why we have a lot of bulletin boards in our childcare facility.

Talk about your common favorite musicians or bands. Share your love for architecture or photography by introducing them to Instagram. There are a lot of ways. Share in the comments below how you celebrate your child’s creativity and innovation.

Help unleash your child’s creativity so they can make good use of it in the future.
